Detached IPs Stat Card

Overview

The "Detached IPs Stat Card" provides insights into Elastic IPs (EIPs) that are currently not attached to any EC2 instances in your AWS environment. While detached IPs do not incur significant costs by themselves, they can contribute to inefficiencies in resource allocation. This stat card helps IT and Security teams identify and manage unused or orphaned Elastic IPs, ensuring better resource utilization and cost management.

Why It Matters

For IT Engineers:

  1. Resource Cleanup:

    • Detached Elastic IPs may represent unused or abandoned resources. IT teams can use this stat card to identify and clean up detached IPs to optimize resource usage and reduce unnecessary resource provisioning.

  2. Cost Management:

    • While Elastic IPs are free when attached to running instances, AWS charges for unused (detached) Elastic IPs. This stat card helps IT engineers identify and release these IPs to avoid unnecessary charges.

  3. Operational Efficiency:

    • By tracking detached IPs, IT teams can ensure that only required IPs are kept in the environment, improving overall resource management and streamlining network configurations.

For Security Engineers:

  1. Security Monitoring:

    • Detached IPs can potentially be reallocated to unauthorized users or instances if not properly managed. Security engineers can use this stat card to ensure that detached IPs are properly handled and do not pose a risk to the organization.

  2. Incident Prevention:

    • Unused IPs could be a source of misconfiguration or exposure if they are left unmanaged. This stat card helps prevent any unintended security vulnerabilities associated with orphaned IPs.

  3. Compliance and Auditing:

    • Ensuring that unused resources like detached IPs are cleaned up and managed properly helps maintain compliance with organizational security policies and audit standards.
